How to post the full photo on Instagram without cropping

Instagram only shows a post as it is when the photo falls inside a set range of ratios. Anything taller or wider gets cut. The fix is to fit the photo into that range: export at the right ratio, or fill the edges.

What Instagram crops

A post can be as wide as 1.91:1 (landscape) and as tall as 3:4 (portrait). Since May 2025 Instagram shows 3:4 without cropping; it is the shape most phone cameras shoot anyway. Anything outside that range gets cut:

2:3 camera photo89% of the heightabout 11%
9:16 screenshot / story75% of the height25%

The profile grid shows posts at 3:4 too, so a 3:4 photo appears uncropped in the feed and on your profile.

1. A phone photo: post it as 3:4

A photo from your phone is most likely 3:4 already. On Instagram's crop screen, tap the two-arrow icon at the bottom left and the photo fits the nearest allowed ratio. A 3:4 photo then shows in full.

2. Taller or wider: fill the edges

To post a 2:3, 9:16 or panoramic photo without cutting it, place it inside the target ratio and fill the space around it. Instagram Resizer does exactly that: pick the post, story or reels size, then choose Blurred background or Solid colour as the fit. The photo stays whole; the edges fill with a blurred copy of it or the colour you pick.

You can pick several photos at once; they all download at the same size and none of them is uploaded.

3. A panorama: split it into a carousel

Fitting a very wide photo makes it tiny. Split it into pieces and post a carousel instead, so whoever swipes sees the whole photo large. Image Splitter cuts the pieces losslessly at the right ratio; the details are in the panorama guide.

Watch out in carousels

The first photo sets the carousel's ratio and the rest are cropped to match. If you mix ratios, bring them all to the same size first, or put the one that matters most first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

A post can be at most 3:4 tall and 1.91:1 wide. If your photo is taller or wider, the overflow is cut. The profile grid also shows posts at 3:4.

How do I post a full-size photo on Instagram?

If it is 3:4, post it as it is with the two-arrow icon on the crop screen. If it is taller or wider, fit it into the target ratio by filling the edges with a blurred background or a solid colour.

What is the best Instagram post size?

1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4). It takes the most room in the feed and is not cropped on the profile grid. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) works too; the grid trims its edges slightly.

Does adding white borders lower the quality?

No. The photo itself is scaled and centred; the borders are filled separately. Export at exactly the target size and Instagram will not shrink it again.
